It’s the eagerly anticipated Netflix feature film which will explore the relationship between Pope Benedict and Pope Francis. And Sir Anthony Hopkins, 79, was seen in character as Pope Benedict as he shot scenes for Netflix’s The Pope in Rome, Italy on Tuesday.  The acclaimed actor donned a ceremonial white robe and gold crucifix necklace as he emerged from a building while cameras rolled.  Joining Anthony was Jonathan Pryce, who takes on the role of Pope Francis.Pryce was dressed in black robes with a silver Cross necklace around his neck.  The project and its stars were announced in September of last year and began shooting in Argentina in November. The film is being directed by Fernando Meirelles, while the script has been written by Anthony McCarten. According to Deadline Hollywood, who first reported the venture, the flick ‘tells the story of Pope Benedict’s election, and his subsequent resignation from the papacy. ‘That opened the door for Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Argentinian Cardinal who became the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the first Pope from outside Europe since the 8th Century. ‘The drama conveys his reluctance to take the top post in 2013. His humility and devotion to the poor has made him a galvanising force for tolerance and change.’ Meanwhile, Anthony will also be starring in the TV movie King Lear this yearAnthony was confirmed to be playing Shakespeare’s famous character back in June, in the new BBC adaptation directed by Richard Eyre. He is considered to be one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, and is best known for his Oscar-winning role in Silence of The Lambs.
