CINCINNATI (WKRC) – The Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus will release a list Monday of Jesuits with credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of minors dating back to 1955. The list of names will be posted to the Province website along with a letter from the Midwest Provincial, Fr. Brian Paulson, SJ.
In anticipation of the release, a letter was sent from St. Xavier High School to its staff, faculty, students and alumni about the upcoming announcement.
Principal Terry Tyrrell says he doesn’t think there will be any cases at the school in the past four decades but is aware there could be some connections to the school.
“If there are names, it’s going to be from 40, 50, 60 years ago,” Tyrrell said. “It’s still a tragedy and we want to pray for the victims but we want to be transparent with our community and move forward.”
The USA Midwest Province posted on it’s website that an established allegation of the sexual abuse of a minor leads to the Jesuit’s permanent removal from public ministry and possible criminal prosecution.
Tyrrell echoed that thought if any current Jesuit at St. X is on the list.
“They would be removed from service immediately and we would contact our local police, Child Protective Services, the Province, and the Diocese,” Tyrrell said. “We would probably move towards removal or termination.”
Because this is a Jesuit release, Xavier University could also have active or former priests on that list. The list will be posted on the USA Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus’ website. That includes names, locations and when the alleged abuse happened.
Victims are encouraged to reach out to St. Xavier High School staff, or call the Province director at 773-975-6876.
